Four. 4. Cuatro.
Four different companies in four years.
Yes, I wrote “four companies in four years” 😂.
As a job hopper, I was never afraid of an interviewer asking me about my frequent job changes. In fact, I looked forward to it. Every new role was a strategic decision, and I always prepared myself to answer the inevitable question: “Why did you change jobs so often?”
This question became a breeze to answer when I started centering my responses around intentionality. Here’s the script I used, and I invite you to adapt it for your own benefit:
“Throughout my career, each transition has been a strategic step, chosen not just for the role itself, but for the unique opportunities and challenges it presented for personal and professional growth.
For example, moving from a tech startup to a non-profit allowed me to leverage my technical skills in a completely new context, broadening my problem-solving abilities and understanding of diverse organizational cultures.
Now, as I seek a more enduring partnership, your company stands out to me not just for its innovative approach to [specific industry/service/product], but also for its commitment to [specific value or mission, e.g., sustainability, community engagement, pioneering technology].
This aligns perfectly with my professional ethos and aspirations. I am eager to bring my cumulative experiences and skills to your team, contributing to our shared goals and forging a lasting and impactful journey together.”
Make your interviewer believe and understand that their work environment is different from the ones that came before. Show them that you see what makes them special and that’s why you think they’re the one worthy of your long-term commitment.
By framing my job changes as intentional and strategic, I was able to convey a narrative of continuous growth and purposeful career development. This approach not only reassured my interviewers but also demonstrated my readiness for a stable and impactful role in their organization.
If you’re struggling with explaining your own job hopping, consider how each of your career moves has been a part of your professional journey. Emphasize the skills you’ve gained and the unique perspectives you’ve acquired, and align them with the values and goals of your potential employer.
Let’s normalize job hopping.
